The Pinyon Canyon Maneuver Site is a roughly 235,000 acre U.S. Army base located in southeastern Colorado used as a training site for Fort Carson since 1985. The site is used for maneuver training and, as such, has hosted two major military exercises a year. In each exercise thousands of troops use thousands of vehicles, some heavy tracked, in a month-long, intensive war maneuver exercise in the expansive wilderness that comprises the area. The decades of heavy use have taken their toll on the diverse and fragile ecosystem, as evident in the criss-crossing of tracks across the majority of the maneuver site.
