Welcome to Evan Anderman Photography: Western Visions! As many of you know, I am embarking on a fascinating journey into landscape photography and I invite you to join me. My background in hydrogeology gives me a unique perspective to view our landscape and I am exploring that in my initial work. This newsletter will keep you apprised of my progress and photographic discoveries of the wonderfully visual world around us, as well as other related events that may be of interest to you. I plan to focus on western landscape photography, but I may venture further afield at times. Watch for future newsletters to keep up to date with my wanderings.
Western Visions: Upcoming Events
Although I will be unable to join you at the opening, I invite you to see my prints featured in Plastik: A Toy Playground at Flash Gallery of Working With Artists. The exhibit opens Friday, March 10th and runs through the end of the month. WWA is located in Belmar.
I am one of the featured artists at the Wine Tasting Spectacular and Art Show, a benefit on March 31st for Summit Cancer Solutions. This event will be held at The Brownstones at Riverfront Park, 1804 Little Raven Street. Reserve early as space is limited to 100.
During the months of April and May I am the featured artist at Dazbog Coffee located at 12th and Speer. It is a intimate setting and a great opportunity to see some of my photographs and get your daily jolt. I will display some of my flower photos in April and then switch out to landscapes photos in May. Make sure to stop by!
Death Valley: Land of Extremes
I spent four days in Death Valley in January taking a photography workshop with renowned landscape photographer Steve Johnson and it was an incredible experience! I have spent time in Death Valley before, during my past life as a hydrogeologist, and I knew that I would return some day to photograph it. It was a grueling week for me as I drove 2,100 miles over 3 days getting out there and back and we literally went from 6 am to 10 pm every day. We would take pictures during the day and then process and critique them every night. There were 13 very well educated and motivated people in the workshop from all over the U.S. Luckily we all got along very well and got some great pictures.
Our itinerary over the fours days took us from one end of the valley to another. After a brief composition and technical lecture on day 1, we emerged from the hotel to find aferocious wind storm raging. We spent the afternoon photographing Golden Canyon and then shot the sunset on the road in front of Artist’s Palette. Day 2 started at Zabriskie Point for sunrise, proceeded to Salt Creek, Artist’s Palette, Devil’s Golf Course, and then we ended up in another wind storm at Bad Water. We shot the sunrise on day 3 at the sand dunes and proceeded to Mosaic Canyon, Titus Canyon, and shot the sunset from the road south of Titus Canyon. I slept in on day 4 and got checked out before a short critique and the journey up to Ubehebe Crater. I departed directly from there and made it well into Utah before having to stop for the night. The next day I made the mandatory stop at the Glenwood Vapor Caves before arriving in Denver all rested and refreshed (not!).
This trip gave me the opportunity to look at Death Valley with new eyes. Before I was concentrating on the fact that Death Valley is the largest groundwater discharge point in the region, which is why Badwater and the Devil’s Gold Course have such beautiful and weird salt formations. But also I saw much more color in the valley this time around, not in the foliage, as this has been a relatively dry year, but in the amazing rock formations and the wonderful sunrises and sunsets. The western U.S. is an amazing place and Death Valley is truly one of its gems.
