Fire & Ice II: Eyjafjallajökull Eruption

Opening Friday, September 3rd, 2010 6-9 pm

I spent five days in May in a bus with fourteen other crazy people bumping along the back, back roads of Iceland trying to get as close to the erupting volcano as possible and I absolutely loved it!  This exhibit is a follow on to the highly successful one from last year, this time there are even some “fire” pictures in the collection.

Fractured Atmosphere

Opening Friday, May 7th, 2010 6-9 pm

A departure from my usual nature photography, this body of work is meant to show that our atmosphere is unfathomably magnificent yet we take it for granted by releasing practically anything into it.  The subject of the photographs is the steam clouds generated at various factories around town during very cold weather.  I purposefully processed the images to bring a sense of other worldliness to the viewer.  As a starting point, the inverted false-color processing brings a depth and richness to the subject, which is then explored in a juxtaposition of alternative interpretations.  First, the process of mirroring lends a sometimes organic feel to the images, drawing the viewer in in an exploration of eerily familiar shapes.  Alternatively, some of the images are randomly fractured, showing the carefree and disjointed way that we treat our atmosphere, the resulting lines and shapes completely obscuring the very thing that forms the basis of the work.  I leave it to the viewer to decide which interpretation best represents the subject.

Please join me and all the other members of the Bolt Factory Lofts for our gala open house, there will be good food and good fun at all the various studios in the building, from painting to photography to robots serving wine.  It should be a fun evening to be out and about.

Worlds Apart

Opening Friday, April 2nd, 2010 6-9 pm

This is the show that was included in a group exhibit at the Lamont Gallery of Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter, New Hampshire in February.  I have included ten images in the show contrasting the stark blue beauty of Antartic icebergs with the vibrant red colors of Zion National Park in southern Utah.  The exhibit was well received at Exeter and I think you will find it interesting.

“All That Is, Is Light,” Photographs by Ben Rose

Opening Friday, March 5th, 2010 6-9 pm

I am pleased to be turning my gallery over to the very talented young artist Ben Rose for the month of March.  He has put together a creative exhibit of photographs that I think you will enjoy very much.

Ben Rose is a Denver-based light artist and photographer. He received his B.A. in Art History and Film History from Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, NY and continued his Art Historical studies in a Doctoral program at City University of New York Graduate Center before finally settling on a M.Sci in Lighting from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute’s Lighting Research Center, which he received in 2009. Drawing inspiration largely from entoptic phenomena, his photography attempts to depict personally interior spaces and forms using unique methods of capturing light.
