Mono | Scape - Reception June 7, 6-9pm

Mono | Scape - Reception June 7, 6-9pm

Our next reception for Mono | Scape will be held Friday, June 7, 2013 from 6-9pm.

Since the beginning of photography, black and white has been a very romantic medium.  Historically photographers used a specific kind of film to shoot black and white.  In the digital age we convert the colors from the image to shades of grey and the result is called a monochrome image, a more accurate description of the result.  Since we as humans see the world around us in color, monochrome images are by definition an abstraction from reality.  Without color, other elements of the photograph play a larger role in the telling of the story, sharp contrasts magnifying the subject matter.

The intent of my work has largely been to show how beautiful and resilient nature is, so most of my photographs have been presented in color.  However, there are certain images in my portfolio that tell a better story without color.  This is an exhibition of those pictures, where the shapes and textures become the aesthetic.

Arctic Impressions: Iceland - Reception April 5, 6-9pm

Arctic Impressions: Iceland - Reception April 5, 6-9pm

(Denver, CO) Journey Through Landscape will present Arctic Impressions: Iceland, featuring the photographic work of Evan Anderman and Eliot Porter. This final show in a three part exhibition series will include fifteen framed photographs by Evan Anderman as well as Eliot Porter’s Iceland, Portfolio II of twelve dye-transfer prints. It will open with a public reception on Friday, March 1 from 6-9pm. It will be on view March 1 – April 27, 2013. An additional reception will be held on First Friday, April 5, 6-9pm. Normal gallery hours are Thursday 12-6pm or by appointment.

About the series:
In the Fall of 2012, artist Evan Anderman had the opportunity to make photographs on an expedition to the Arctic. The tour visited three distinct geographic regions in the North Atlantic: Spitsbergen, Greenland, and Iceland. The Arctic Impressions exhibition series explores the sites encountered on that expedition.

At the end of the cruise Anderman disembarked in Reykjavik and chartered an airplane to photograph Iceland from the air.  Using his experience as a pilot, Anderman was able to see the landscape differently and precisely guide the pilot on the adventure.  The resulting images provide a unique perspective of Iceland that most visitors won’t see.  The angle of view compresses the landscape and the lack of horizon make the images almost seem fake, but they aren’t.  The soft light and vivid spectrum of colors paint the diverse landscape in an enchanted and magical way, feeling more impressionistic than abstract.  This is landscape like you have never seen before.

Next Reception - First Friday, April 5, 6-9pm.

Arctic Impressions: Greenland

Arctic Impressions: Greenland

Journey Through Landscape is pleased to present Arctic Impressions: Greenland, the second in a three part exhibition series of photographic work by Evan Anderman. The show will open with a public reception on Friday, January 4 from 6-9pm. It will be on view January 4 – February 23, 2013. An additional reception for the public will be held on First Friday, February 1, from 6-9pm.

The third and final part of the series, Arctic Impressions: Iceland, will open Friday, March 1, 2013 from 6-9pm as part of the Month of Photography celebration in Colorado and will be on view through April 27, 2013.

About the series:
In the Fall of 2012, artist Evan Anderman had the opportunity to make photographs on an expedition to the Arctic. The tour visited three distinct geographic regions in the North Atlantic: Spitsbergen, Greenland, and Iceland. The Arctic Impressions exhibition series explores the sites Anderman encountered on that expedition.
After Spitsbergen the expedition continued on to Greenland, which presented a completely different landscape. The sheer awesome grandness of the place boggled the mind. The Scoresbysund fjord complex is 100 miles in from the sea, a parade of icebergs leading the way in. The panoramic blue sky is almost oppressive in comparison to the grayness of Spitsbergen, reinforcing the scale of the land and making one feel even more insignificant. This landscape required a different approach to bring everything into context, from the details of the many icebergs and glaciers, to the varied geology of the fjords themselves and the northern lights illuminating the sky at night. Greenland was clearly the highlight of the trip. Taken as a whole the Arctic Impressions series will provide a well-rounded depiction of this rapidly changing part of the world.

Opening Reception - First Friday, January 4, 6-9pm.

Exhibition on view through February 23 , 2013
